Free eye-care outreach opens in Talata Mafara

A free eye-care outreach supported by Senator Abdulaziz Yari opened at General Hospital, Talata Mafara, in November 2023. The pilot targeted 1,000 people in Zamfara West who could not readily afford treatment.

Access to treatment

Visions Savers Eye Care Center was named as the delivery team. The planned care included assessment, treatment, surgery where clinically appropriate and medicines. More complex cases could be referred for specialist attention.

Older people, women, children and other vulnerable residents were among the intended beneficiaries. Selection for subsequent phases was to include Anka, Bakura, Bukkuyum, Gummi, Maradun and Talata Mafara.

What the figure represents

The 1,000-person figure describes the pilot's intended reach at its inauguration. It is not a count of completed operations, and treatment and surgery are not interchangeable measures.

The intervention brought a specialist service closer to constituents. For residents who faced financial barriers to treatment, the outreach offered an opportunity to receive specialist attention at a hospital within the district.
