Abdulaziz Yari Abubakar

Senator Abdulaziz Abubakar Yari represents Zamfara West in Nigeria’s Senate. A former Governor of Zamfara State and former Chairman of the Nigeria Governors’ Forum, he has served in party organisation, the House of Representatives, state executive leadership and the Senate. Roots in Zamfara and grassroots politics

Talata Mafara is central to Yari’s personal and political story. House of Representatives, 2007 to 2011

Yari represented Anka/Talata Mafara Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives from 2007 to 2011. This was his first period of service in the National Assembly, before his election as Governor of Zamfara State.

For a constituency whose residents depend on agriculture, commerce and public services, that relationship spans infrastructure, education, health and the opportunities available to young people. Two terms as Governor of Zamfara State

Elected Governor in 2011 and re-elected in 2015, Yari served until 2019. The development agenda of those years included road connectivity, education infrastructure, healthcare, water supply, rural electrification and agricultural support. The Talata Mafara bypass is one part of that infrastructure story. Roads within towns and between communities influence the movement of farm produce, access to markets and the journeys families make to schools and hospitals. The road programme also encompassed corridors such as Mayanchi–Anka and Magami–Dangulbi–Dankurmi–Anka, placing rural connectivity alongside urban development.

In August 2018, projects inaugurated during Acting President Yemi Osinbajo’s visit included the upgraded General Hospital in Bakura, the Gamji water project, a model primary school and road works in Talata Mafara. Improvements at Government Girls College, Talata Mafara, formed part of the same period of educational investment. Schools, girls’ education and practical learning

Education runs through Yari’s public-service record in different forms. During his governorship, the emphasis included school buildings and improvements to learning environments. Health, water and rural services

In November 2023, his health work took the form of a specialist eye-care outreach at General Hospital, Talata Mafara. The pilot was designed for 1,000 vulnerable residents of Zamfara West, with examinations, treatment and surgery where clinically appropriate. That target describes the programme’s intended reach; it is not a count of completed operations.

The distinction matters to the people using a service. An examination, a prescription and an operation are different forms of care. The chairmanship was separate from his executive mandate in Zamfara. It required coordination among peers whose states faced different circumstances but shared responsibilities for public services. Senator for Zamfara West

Yari’s current elected mandate covers Anka, Bakura, Bukkuyum, Gummi, Maradun and Talata Mafara. These six local government areas form Zamfara West Senatorial District. Representation connects their concerns with federal lawmaking, scrutiny of public administration and dialogue with national institutions.

The district’s needs extend across access to education and healthcare, rural livelihoods, infrastructure and security. Constituency engagement provides a route for those concerns to reach the office. His consultations have included religious leaders in Kaduna, Jos and Bauchi, traditional institutions in Benin City and Maiduguri, and Islamic scholars in Zamfara.
