The Senator A. A. Yari Scholarship Initiative supports access to tertiary education for indigent and orphaned students from Zamfara.

Education support

The programme’s June 2024 announcement set out support for 1,700 students. By July 2025, registration assistance covered 2,055 students in the 2024/2025 academic session, across 19 tertiary institutions.

The 2024/2025 programme supported registration across 16 public and three private institutions. Its focus was students whose financial circumstances could prevent them from taking up or continuing a place in tertiary education.

How support is organised

The initiative is administered through its education committee. Assistance is intended to reduce the financial barriers that can prevent students from taking up admission or continuing their studies.

The programme reaches students from across Zamfara State. Administering support through an education committee brings student selection and registration assistance within the same programme structure.

Participation

A current application window has not been announced on this page. Students and families can contact the office for information and follow the opportunities page for any published intake notice.

New intake notices will set out application dates, eligibility and the documents applicants need to provide.

Students behind the programme

The scholarship record is also a record of individual ambitions. One student in Gusau describes continuing to university after financial hardship had placed further study in doubt. A nursing student from Gummi explains his hope of qualifying so that people in his community have someone to turn to when they are ill.

Education as continuing work

A scholarship helps remove a financial barrier; the student must still undertake the study and training required by the course. The nursing student’s ambition is therefore presented as a journey towards qualification. The university feature likewise focuses on continued learning rather than an unverified graduation or employment outcome.
