A place at university can be the beginning of a new life. It can also remain out of reach when a family cannot meet the costs that follow admission. For one scholarship student in Gusau, support from the Senator A. A. Senator Yari Scholarship Initiative made the difference between an interrupted ambition and the opportunity to continue studying.

Finding a way back to education

In this film, the student describes completing secondary school and then facing uncertainty about what would come next. Financial pressure within her family had made further study difficult to imagine. The scholarship offered a practical route back into education, helping her take up the opportunity to learn at university.

Her account centres on the support that makes attendance possible: tuition and help with everyday expenses. It is a reminder that access to education involves more than an admission letter. Students also need the means to remain enrolled, attend classes and participate in the life of their institution.

A student’s perspective

The film moves between the university environment, the scholarship office and the student’s own account. She explains what the assistance means to her and reflects on other students whose circumstances make financial support important. Her experience is personal; it gives the wider programme a human face without standing in for every participant.

Her interest in studying microorganisms also points to the ambitions that can sit behind an application for help. A scholarship supports someone with a subject to pursue and a future to work towards. The value of the intervention lies partly in keeping that possibility open while the student does the demanding work of learning.

The scholarship programme

The Senator A. A. Senator Yari Scholarship Initiative supports tertiary education for students facing financial hardship. Its 2024/2025 programme record covers 2,055 students across 19 institutions. That period-specific record is separate from this August 2026 student account and should not be treated as a new intake announcement.

Education assistance is one part of Senator Yari’s wider community work in Zamfara. It sits alongside health outreach and support for livelihoods, addressing a stage of life when the cost of participation can determine whether an opportunity is taken up at all.

Watch the student’s account

The film includes the student interview, university scenes and the scholarship office. English text accompanies the spoken account. It follows the difficulty of continuing after secondary school, the assistance received and the student’s appreciation for the chance to keep studying.
